<p>Church Gravestones Inscriptions and Locations.</p>
<p>The Gravestone project for St. Agnes' Church, the Cemetery and Memorial/Remembrance is ongoing and will be updated as time permit which is being listed to help those people who wish to trace some of their family history.</p>
<p>The inscription have been taken from the gravestones and from records held by the Cawston Historical Society which are in the Heritage Centre at the Village Hall.</p>
<p>Many of the stones are now getting very difficult to read and no records have been sort. Please feel free to contact us quoting the relevant reference grave number as used within the gravestone index if you think that any plan position, or inscriptions have been transcribed incorrectly as accuracy is not guaranteed, a photo of every stone will be included whether it is readable or not.</p>
<p>We understand on the north side we have plaque pit graves (Cholera 1832)</p>

<p><span class="C-6">The Gravestone project for </span><span class="C-6">St. Agnes' Church<span class="C-6">, the Cemetery and </span></span><span class="C-6">Memorial/Remembrance<span class="C-6"> is ongoing and will be updated as time permit which is being listed to help those people who wish to trace some of their family history.<br /><br />The inscription have been taken from the gravestones and from records held by the Cawston Historical Society<span class="C-6"> which are in the </span>Heritage room<span class="C-6"> at the </span>Village Hall<span class="C-6">.<br /><br />Many of the stones are now getting very difficult to read and no records have been sort. <p>Miss Avis Marsh started a Scout group at Cawston in 1932.</p>
<p>Born in Southampton, Miss Marsh moved to Norfolk when her father became Rector at Cawston, her 55 years with the Scouts began in 1914 when she became Scoutmaster at Aylsham, running the troop for nearly 20 years. She started a Scout group at Cawston In 1932 and formed a troop at Roughton when she moved to West Runton a year later.</p>
<p> In 1943, she re-formed the West Runton Scout Group and became Assistant District Commissioner for North Norfolk, being promoted to District Commissioner for Sheringham in 1952. Although she retired from her post in 1967. she remained a member of the West Runton Executive Committee.</p>
<p>Miss Marsh was awarded the Medal of Merit in 1932, the Silver Acorn in 1955 and the Silver Wolf in 1961, the highest Scout award presented.</p>
<h4>Scout Meeting Places 1920's by Mr Wilfred E. Tubby - 1/8/99</h4>
<p>THe Cawston Scout Group Headquarters was opened by Miss Avis Marsh in June 22nd 1985.</p>
<p>THE DISPUTE OVER THE SCOUT'S HUT</p>
<p>In the E.D.P. was a report, that the hut used by the scouts for about 70 years, that is wrong, no hut was there at that time. Scouts yes, and a time before that. I joined the 1st Cawston Scout Group in March 1920, as a Wolf Cub, then in the Scouts four years later. Our meeting place was a small room, next to the rectory little kitchen, it had a floor like you would find in a stable, was hardly room to move, then later on, the Rev. T.H. Marsh let us have some buildings at the bottom of the rectory property, backing on to Goose pie Lane. We cleaned all the muck out, and M.D. Howard and Son did all the work on it, and made us a good room.</p>
<p>We got up a concert to raise funds to pay for it, we had two nights, had a full house each time, tickets cost 9 pence and 6 pence. Got enough to pay for it. We also did the same show at Holt, Reepham and Salle.</p>
<p>A Miss Chamber, from West Runton, did some charcoal drawings on the walls. I was a senior scout and helped Rev. Haylock of Booton and Brandiston to run Booton scouts until he moved away, the helper, the late Tom Sayer.</p>

Heydon Minstrels

Despite its name this village concert party had a strong contingent of Cawston members. Originally conceived as a minstrel show by an American airman based at Heydon in 1953 it evolved under the direction of Jim Howard into a variety show with Jim as the Norfolk comedian and compere and his wife Sylvia as pianist.
The group travelled around more than 44 Norfolk villages giving their full length show of sketches and songs for more than twenty years.
As well as the original American members of the cast Cawston was represented by Dewings: Dinah (Aves), Mollie (Mack); Teddy and David; Lees: Lennie, Alan and Roy; Howards: Jim, Sylvia, Mary and Christopher.
Heydon families: Flo and Robert Wadlow; Peggy and Wendy Knowles; Jean Rowe (George).

Description
An account of the resource
<p>This lovely area of heathland to the east of Cawston might be considered to have changed little over the centuries. This may be true in some respects, for the birch trees, gorse, and heather continue in their beauty, but our ancestors of the First Elizabethan days would be amazed that today the heath is almost unknown to many of our local inhabitants, and plays little part in their lives. In Tudor times it was of considerable importance, a place where farmers grazed their sheep under the fold-course system, where controlled rabbit warrens provided food, while the villagers had grazing rights for their livestock and relied on the area for their fuel supplies. These resources were jealously guarded by farmer and tenant, rich and poor, and from time to time there were lawsuits to settle problems.</p>
<p>The eastern extremity of the heath is a strip of land extending into Marsham, once known as Dead Man's Hill. Long ago a body was found here, and a dispute arose as to whether Cawston or Marsham should arrange the burial. Cawston accepted responsibility, and our present parish boundary includes this land. Not far away is Gallows Hill, where a gibbet once stood, an unhappy sight for travellers along the old heath road from Marsham. An even older road, possibly pre Roman, leading inland from the coast, passed near Botany Bay Farm, on through Eastgate to Booton, and all the way to Castleacre. This road can be traced on aerial photographs, and in favourable conditions appears as a light track across the fields on the south side of the road to Buxton.</p>
<p>Two local August anniversaries are connected with the heath. The last Duel in Norfolk was fought here on August 20th, 1698, and the story of how Oliver Le Neve killed Sir Henry Hobart is well known, and commemorated by the stone near the Woodrow Garage, a delightful little National Trust site adorned with masses of violets in spring. August too, saw the great Sheep Fair, held over several centuries on the last Wednesday in the month. It has been described as "the greatest sheep show in the country", and brought huge flocks to the surrounding roads, lambs from the west Norfolk breeders being sold to the graziers from the east.</p>
<p>Cawston Heath today, although diminished in size, is well worth a visit at all seasons - but if you go on a hot day in August keep an eye open for adders!</p>

<p>Brief History:</p>
<p>At the enclosure of the Heath, in 1802, an allotment of 100A was awarded to the parishioners for fuel.</p>
<p>1066: Forest to Heathland - Sheep & Pig grassing. 1400 to 1600: and Rabbit Warren. 1698: Duel on Heath. 1802: The Enclosure Act resulted in the "dividing, allotting, and enclosing of common fields" in Cawston. 1914 to 1918 WW1 and 1939 to 1945 WW2 used for rifle firing range. 1963:16 hectares ploughed up and cropped, turned back to heath in 1993. 1986: Designated a site of special scientific interest. Agreement with Natural England & Managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust.</p>
<p>In 2014, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust began an ambitious project to restore about four hectares back to open heathland.</p>
<p>After removing the pine and scrub and grinding the stumps, the final process of striping the surface of humus and pine needles was completed to allow heather seeds to germinate.</p>
<p>Once established, this heather-dominated landscrape will again be good habitat for heathland specialities such as woodlarks, nightjars and adders.</p>

Parish Plan

<p>After a public meeting attended by around twenty five people, it was agreed to proceed with a group that would assist with the organization of the work towards producing a village plan.</p>
<p>The first meeting was held on Tuesday 8th April 2007, attended by ten people. The group discussed different ways to approach people in Cawston to ascertain their views on what was required in Cawston. The meeting considered Parish Plans produced by other councils and the range and scope of the possible questions.</p>
<p>Ideas were also suggested for contacting people who might not normally participate in such an exercise.</p>
<p>It was agreed to ask the steering group to consider the range of questions for a questionnaire for discussion at the next meeting which was held on Tuesday April 29th at the Scout Hut.</p>
<p>The questions was developed by a group of Cawston residents and the questionnaires delivered by volunteers by hand and collected one week later.</p>
<p>The parish Plan was then produced and completed in 2010 by Andrew Cameron-Heffer. James Livingstone. Terry Simons. John Carrick. Rob Young and then distributed.</p>
<p>The Parish Plan was made possible with the assistance of Cawston Parish Council. Broadland District Council and Norfolk RCC.</p>

<p>The Oakes Family Playing Field is a community resource owned and managed by Cawston Parish Council for all the families living in the Cawston parish.</p>
<p>A joint Project Team was formed with the Oakes Memorial Trust and Cawston We Aim Higher Group to co-ordinate the planning and development of the field and a Master Plan was drawn up.</p>
<p>Several applications for funding was successful meaning that in total around £150,000 was raised to develop various 'play landscapes' for toddlers, primary age children, teenagers as well as a multi purpose games area and bmxl skateboard area, most of these was completed by the summer of 2008....<br /><br />Click on files to view full screen....</p>

Mills at Cawston
Description
An account of the resource
<p>It was quite unique for 2 windmills to be built on the same site as the twin mills at Sygate being only about 50 yards apart and linked by railway lines, built possibly at the same time as the 4 Mill Cottages by the road in front of the mills and bearing the date 1853-JSH.</p>
<p>One mill had a white cap and the other a black.</p>
<p>The grain for milling would come from local farmers and from Cawston railway station, it was transported from the station to the the mill by horse and cart, the horses being stabled at the mill. The black mill was on right of the white mill looking from the road and was bought by Mr Stanley Oakes from Mr Bamber Stackwood. (also coal merchant).</p>
<p>The Black Mill was taken down in 1955 and the brick rubble used for a private road way (Jerry's Loke) off the Booton road in Cawston, the Mill was partly pulled down by way of a girder being placed on the inside across a window, a rope was then attached and tied to a motorized timber drudge, (winch) demolition was carried out by Taylor Bros of Wroxham. the white mill would have had the same fate but was saved by the rope breaking.</p>
<p>In the 1970's, the 2 left cottages were made into one.</p>
<p>In 2003 the white mill was converted to holiday accommodation.<br /><br />Click on file to view full screen....</p>

<p>The Women's Institute started on the 23rd February 1921 with 52 members. Members marked their 90th birthday with a special celebration at the same venue as it did 90 years ago at the Cecil Cawston Memorial Institute (Village Hall Cawston).<br /><br />The WI was finally able to celebrate its 100th birthday with a garden party at The Bell in Cawston in the summer of 2022. The celebration had been delayed a year because of the Covid 19 pandemic.</p>
<p>Sadly in 2021 the WI ceased to exixt. However in 2022 a new group has risen from the ashes, the appropriately named Phoenix Ladies Circle (PLC) with plans to meet regularly at the village hall. The WI has donated a number of items to the Cawston Historical Society. Including two photograph albums.<span>.</span></p>
